United director says club sale inevitable
However Edelson, who has been on United’s board since 1982, insists that any change of ownership will not happen in the foreseeable future.
Many Red Devils supporters are unhappy at the way the American owners have plunged the Premier League giants into debt.
Fans’ groups have been throwing their weight behind the Red Knights, a consortium who were keen to launch a takeover bid.
The Glazers responded to the movements of the Red Knights by insisting that they would not entertain any offers for the club.
And while Edelson firmly believes that the status quo will be maintained for the foreseeable future, he does believe there will come a point when the Glazer family look to move on.
He said: “It is inevitable that at some time they will sell, but that will be a long way down the line.”
Meanwhile midfielder Michael Carrick has warned against complacency after helping United take charge of the Barclays Premier League title race.
After struggling to convert draws into wins in the early part of the campaign, United have secured top spot at Christmas with three successive wins.
With a two-point advantage over Chelsea and Manchester City and with games in hand — one over the Londoners and two over their neighbours — Alex Ferguson’s men, who are still unbeaten, are now favourites to reclaim the title.
But Carrick is not taking anything for granted, stating: ” “A couple of bad performances and bad results aren’t far behind. That’s what keeps you going and keeps you on your toes.
“It was a frustrating time earlier on in the season when we felt we were throwing away some games when we were in front.
“It’s funny how things can change in this league, but we’re not getting carried away.”
Elsewhere Anderlecht striker Romelu Lukaku will disappoint a host of Premier League clubs by committing his short-term future to the Belgian champions.
The 17-year-old has been strongly linked with Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United in recent months, as well as Spanish giants Real Madrid.
But it’s understood Lukaku, who was the Belgian league’s top scorer last season, will not move in January.
He has scored 13 goals this term with top-of-the league Anderlecht.
Lukaku burst on to the scene last year as a 16-year-old in Belgium, scoring 15 league goals as Anderlecht cruised to the Jupiler League title.
He has been linked with a move to either the Premier League or La Liga but today in Brussels is expected to reiterate his desire to stay at Anderlecht at least until the end of this season.
