Givens: McCarthy wise to avoid Miller’s tale

DON GIVENS believes James McCarthy avoided the same frustrating fate of Liam Miller by opting to join Wigan ahead of more glamorous Premier League names.

Midfield talent McCarthy had been linked with Liverpool and Chelsea in the past year but when he made the switch from Hamilton to English football it was at the unfashionable DW Stadium that he ended up.

But Republic of Ireland U21 chief Givens is adamant the 18-year-old was right not to be lured by the attraction of the superstar names – and used Miller’s fall from the top of the tree as way of warning.
