Smith: Fergie can achieve famous five

WALTER SMITH believes if there is one manager capable of winning an unprecedented quintuple, it is Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United remain on course to win five trophies this season after adding the Carling Cup to the Club World Cup already residing at Old Trafford.

Smith took Rangers close to a quadruple last season, before being forced to settle for the League Cup and the Scottish Cup.

But, having worked with Ferguson at close quarters during a short spell as his United assistant, Smith would not be surprised to see his fellow Scotsman defy the odds with a clean sweep of silverware.

“He just continues to defy logic in terms of winning a number of trophies,” said Smith.

“His drive and determination is as great now as it has been at any time.

“You could see it in the squad how much it meant to them, even some of the younger ones, to win the League Cup at the weekend.

“The drive and determination to win five trophies is there.

“It would be an extraordinary achievement.

“But, if any manager can do it, it’s him. And, if any team can do it, it’s Manchester United.’’
