Neville: Everton can’t play with fear
Captain Phil Neville prescribes a combative approach to ensure the Toffees do not come unstuck against their biggest rivals.
Since a 2-0 defeat against the Reds at Goodison Park in September, Everton have chiselled out a series of favourable results which have helped them move up the table and consolidate a position of security – sixth to Liverpool’s first.
Neville knows there is likely to be a frosty but the ex-Manchester United defender will take it on the chin. However, it will be harder to accept if Everton under-perform.
“I would say the last two derby performances we haven’t done ourselves justice,” he said.
“We have flattered to deceive and not done what we set out to achieve. On Monday, we hope to put that right.”
Everton have won five of their last six – conceding no goals – and Neville is asking for more of the same.
“We need to produce the kind of form we have been showing,” he said. “They will know we have improved since we last played them. They will know we are in good form, and I’m sure they’ve done their homework. But it’s all about us on Monday night; it’s about going there with no fear, taking the game to Liverpool and giving it our all.”
