Backing of Spurs team-mates lifts Gomes

HEURELHO GOMES has repaid the faith of his team-mates to prove he can cut it in the Premier League, according to Tottenham defender Michael Dawson.

The 27-year-old Brazilian committed several high-profile blunders earlier in the season to leave some questioning just why former boss Juande Ramos spent almost £8m to bring him from PSV Eindhoven in the summer.

However, under the guidance of new goalkeeping coach Tony Parks following the appointment of Harry Redknapp, Gomes has produced some much-improved displays.

A fine double save helped secure victory at West Ham, while his tip over from Ryan Giggs’ last-gasp free-kick made sure Manchester United left White Hart Lane goalless on Saturday evening.

Gomes feels the support of his colleagues and public backing from Redknapp have helped put a smile back on his face.

“We all go through hard times and you need your team-mates to help you out, we have all done that with Gomes,” said Dawson. “He is a great guy and his performances are showing how good he really is.”

The improved form of Gomes should lead to Redknapp dropping plans to bring in another goalkeeper when the transfer window opens in January.

It is more likely Redknapp will seek to improve his defensive options, with a raid on former club Portsmouth for Sylvain Distin a strong possibility.

Spurs return to European action tomorrow night with the visit of Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Cup. Jermaine Jenas (calf) and Jonathan Woodgate (back) are fitness concerns.
