UEFA will investigate Augustin Binya’s horror tackle which forced Celtic midfielder Scott Brown out of Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win over Benfica.

UEFA to probe horror lunge on Celtic’s Brown

Binya was shown a straight red card by Swedish referee Martin Hansson for the challenge late on at Celtic Park and faces at least a one-match ban.

Brown accused his opponent of trying to break his leg and urged Uefa to take further action against the midfielder.

Uefa’s disciplinary body next meet on Thursday, November 15 and the spokesman added: “There will be at least a one-match ban.

Meanwhile captain Stephen McManus insists Celtic are still alive and kicking in the Champions League after victory over Benfica.

The Scottish champions headed into the clash at Celtic Park bottom of Group D and knowing that another defeat would as good as deal a fatal blow to their chances of reaching the knockout phase.

Losses on the road to Shakhtar Donetsk and Benfica mean Celtic’s poor away form in the competition has continued this season, and they were relying on an impressive home record to steer their campaign back on track against the Portuguese.

Goalscorer and chief tormentor Aiden McGeady proved to be the difference between the two teams last night, and McManus insists Celtic now have just as much chance of progressing from the group stages as anyone else in the section.

They face Shakhtar Donetsk at home in their next match, before facing AC Milan in the San Siro, but the Hoops skipper insisted: “It was a big result and it keeps us in the mix which is what we wanted at this stage of the campaign. We are still in there fighting. When you play with Celtic, you have to be confident.”

Manager Gordon Strachan hailed McGeady as “awesome” after the match, while goalkeeper Artur Boruc backed the 21-year-old to be even better than Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo when he hits his peak.

“Aiden deserved everything he got and all the compliments he has been getting,” McManus said.

“He was different class and it’s great to see him doing it on this stage.”

Celtic now have a free weekend before Scotland face Italy at Hampden in a make-or-break Euro 2008 qualifier on November 17.
