Knee operation rules Kavanagh out of Euro qualifiers
The 32-year-old Sunderland player will go into hospital tomorrow for an operation after injuring his knee in Saturday’s league game against Ipswich Town.
Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Staunton said: “Graham requires a cartilage operation so he will be out for four to six weeks and is touch and go for the home game against San Marino on November 15. He is one of our experienced players so he will be a loss but that’s why we named such a big squad in the first place and we also have the option of calling up other players.”
Staunton added that Everton midfielder Lee Carsley has asked to be considered for selection.
In April 2004, Carsley retired from international football because of family commitments and his preference to concentrate on his club career.
Staunton said: “Lee wishes to be considered for selection as he has now re-established himself in the Everton first team and that is welcome.”
With Charlton midfielder Andy Reid unavailable for the Cyprus game, Staunton’s original 25-man squad has now been reduced to 23. However, he will wait until after the weekend before deciding if he needs to call up more players.
The U21 international against Luxembourg on October 18 will take place in the Stade Fr Trausch, Mamer, with a 7pm (local time) kick-off.
