‘Disappointed’ Rooney makes peace with Ronaldo
Rooney was sent off for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho as Portugal knocked England out on penalties and Ronaldo’s provocative behaviour caused outrage in the aftermath of the match.
The Portuguese winger was seen shoving his head into Rooney’s before the match and encouraging referee Horacio Elizondo to send the England striker off after the Carvalho incident.
Rooney lost his temper and shoved Ronaldo during the furore and though he admitted he was “disappointed” with his United colleague’s behaviour, he was also disappointed it resulted in Ronaldo being denied FIFA’s best young player award after the tournament.
“It’s fine now. I spoke to him on the night after the game.
“I’m not going to lie, I was disappointed with the way he ran over to the referee.
“But at the end of the day we weren’t team-mates that day. We were rivals. I wanted to win, he wanted to win for his country so we have to get on with it and hopefully do well for Manchester United together,” Rooney said.
“I think he should have won the young player award at the World Cup but because of the criticism he got it was taken away from him.
“I was disappointed for him, I think everyone at the club was disappointed for him. He had a good tournament and I don’t think he should have had it taken away from him because of that.”
Rooney also reaffirmed his intention to see out his career at Old Trafford.
“I’m happy here and looking to sign a new contract,” he said.
“I want to stay at the club, I am happy at the club so there’s no reason not to [stay].”
nManchester United have confirmed the capture of goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak from West Brom.
In exchange, West Brom will get Irish U-21 international defender Paul McShane and goalkeeper Luke Steele on a permanent basis.
Kuszczak will act as understudy to United’s first-choice goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna claims he will be happy to stay at the club if his projected move to United collapses.
The 30-year-old Brazil-born Spain international admitted he would prefer the move to go through but is not raising his expectations.
Senna said: “Either there could be an agreement and I could move to Manchester but if it is not like this, then let nobody think that I would be annoyed to stay at Villarreal.
“This is my home, no less, and I have been here for several years and if I have to stay I will do so happily,” he said.
