Ferguson labeled Saturday’s performance the worst he has seen from his team in the world’s oldest knock-out competition during his entire 18-year Old Trafford reign.

Only Wes Brown, Phil Neville and 20-year-old David Jones were exempt from the Scot’s criticism and it was widely anticipated Ferguson would bring back the majority of his first-team stars for the Carling Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge in order to spare United from an even worse humiliation.
