Spurs go extra mile to pinch Pole Rasiak
Wolves boss Hoddle believed he had the deal in the bag when they agreed a fee with Derby for the striker earlier in the day.
But the move collapsed because Wolves and the player could not agree personal terms. Spurs then stepped in to pinch the target man, who is now set for a high profile debut against Liverpool following Mido's unsuccessful bid to overturn his sending off against Chelsea.
Mido will be absent from Tottenham's Premiership matches at home to Liverpool and away to Aston Villa as well as their Carling Cup second round trip to Grimsby.
If he receives a further one-match ban for failing to leave the field, then Mido will miss the televised clash with Fulham on September 26.
His absence will give Rasiak, signed for £2m, the chance to begin his Spurs career in style.
The 26-year-old Polish striker was one of the major reasons behind Derby's resurgence in the Championship.
However, the move has angered Derby's director of football Murdo Mackay and manager Phil Brown, who claimed the move was done before they were even told the player was heading for Spurs.
Mackay vented his fury at chief executive Jeremy Keith and even suggested he could quit the club.
"I'm very disappointed at the way the Rasiak deal has been handled and it is a reflection of what I believe is wrong with the structure," he said.
"The deal was virtually agreed when the manager and myself first heard of it. Jeremy is a talented individual but I do not think his talents lie in football.
"He wants to be heavily involved on the football side and that is his right but you do not need two directors of football. If the board see it that way and I have to move on then so be it.
"It's not what I want but at the end of the day Jeremy Keith calls the shots."
Keith claims he thought Tottenham's move for Rasiak was a joke when the telephone rang on Wednesday night.
He explained: "The first phone call about Spurs came at 7pm and I thought it was a wind-up. We had been working hard to keep Grzegorz at the club but when he was told about Tottenham, he wanted to play in the Premiership. We have lost a very good player."
Spurs had already strengthened their squad prior to the move for Rasiak by bringing in Jermaine Jenas from Newcastle for £7 million and Korean left-back Lee Young-pyo for just over £1million.
They counter-balanced that outlay be selling Erik Edman to Rennes for £3million and allowing Reto Ziegler to head for Hamburg in a season-long loan deal.
Spurs coach Martin Jol has been looking for a target man since selling Fredi Kanoute to Sevilla for £4.4million two weeks ago.
Chelsea knocked back their interest in England U21 striker Carlton Cole as did Livorno in their attempts to land Christiano Lucarelli.
Jol's task of finding a suitable replacement for Kanoute was made all the more urgent when the FA decreed Mido's three-match ban for his elbow offence on Del Horno would stand.
Furthermore, the added charge of improper conduct meant Jol was facing the possibility of playing four matches with just Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe as recognised strikers.
