Old Trafford and Parkhead open to Ireland’s games

MANCHESTER UNITED have joined Celtic in offering the FAI the use of their ground for the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifying matches.

However, FAI chiefs last night denied that talks had taken place with either club about such potential arrangements.

The delayed redevelopment of Lansdowne Road and the decision of the GAA to refuse Croke Park to the FAI means home games against France, Switzerland, Cyprus, Israel and the Faroe Islands may have to be played outside of the Republic.

A Celtic spokesman admitted that they would welcome the possibility of Irish games at Parkhead.

“We have already made it clear to the FAI we’d be delighted to discuss the possibility of hosting future Irish international matches at Celtic Park.”

Manchester United also confirmed that Ireland could play the games at Old Trafford should a suitable solution not be found.

The club yesterday confirmed talks with the FAI had taken place, with a United statement reading: "We have had informal conversations with the FAI and, subject to approval from the appropriate bodies, we would be delighted to host some games at Old Trafford.”

The stadium is the largest league ground in Great Britain, with a capacity of 67,706. Parkhead is the largest club stadium in Scotland, with a capacity of 60,501.

The FAI’s exemption from the ban on temporary seating for competitive matches expired after September’s 1-1 draw with Russia at Lansdowne Road and chief executive Fran Rooney admitted that FIFA is unlikely to grant another exemption unless the Association can put forward plans for a new stadium development.

“Moving the matches outside the country is not something we would like to do but playing in front of a two-sided Lansdowne Road is currently the worst option available to us,” said Rooney.

“We don’t want to go outside the country but we may be left with no alternative.”
