Milner stole the headlines by becoming the youngest player to score in the Premiership at 16 years 357 days, beating the milestone set by Everton striker Wayne Rooney just two months ago by just four days.

With Leeds under the cosh either side of the break, Milner hauled United level in the 50th minute with a poacher’s strike from six yards to stun most of the 44,000 in the Stadium of Light as Sunderland should have been home and dry.
