Toffees out to spoil the party as Wright prepares for Chelsea charge
Everton are more than aware they are being set up as sacrificial lambs at what Chelsea hope will be their Championship party this afternoon.
If Chelsea take more points against the Toffees than Manchester United do at Tottenham, the west Londoners will retain their title.
It is a daunting prospect facing Everton and their goalkeeper, who became a laughing stock in February by injuring an ankle falling over a sign at Stamford Bridge that told him not to practice in the goalmouth. The daft injury meant he had to be replaced by rookie Iain Turner just minutes before Everton's 4-1 FA Cup replay defeat.
Wright is back in the first team now and produced a man-of-the-match display on Saturday against Spurs, with a string of top class saves.
He said of his pending return to Stamford Bridge: "I do not have to be reminded about what happened at Chelsea last time we were there. I can assure everyone I will be keeping an eye out for any signs in the goalmouth telling me I should not be there.
"Chelsea are top, playing well and threatening to win it again. It will be difficult but I can't wait to get out there and hopefully make some saves.
"I expect to be busy. I know our last few results have not been good, but we must look forward to the games ahead."
Everton should have been well beaten by Spurs and need to improve on goalscoring. They are on course for their lowest-ever league return.
That was why Moyes was at Cardiff on Friday, watching England Under-21 striker Cameron Jerome, who Cardiff expect to sell in the summer.
Wright kept Everton in the game against Spurs and allowed at least the chance of a grandstand finish.
Wright said: "I feel I am playing well because I have been given a run in the side by the gaffer, although he hasn't said anything about my future.
"Our results have not been too good recently, but things in life do not always go the way you want. I can only concentrate on what I do, and perform to the best of my ability."
Moyes saw his side concede a Robbie Keane penalty and struggle to contain a team he described as "the best to have played at Goodison all season".
Now they have to face a rampant Chelsea and Moyes said: "We know we face Chelsea with them on the brink of winning the title, but we all want to be involved in big games so we are looking forward to it.
"We have to work on how to stop them. The only way is to work hard, compete and get into their faces. How else can you do it? They have such great players and a fantastic team.
"But we will be going there intent on repeating the two more than decent results we got against them at Goodison Park this season.
"If we want to be close to them we will have to play very, very well. There is such a gap between the quality they have and what we have."
Moyes also refuses to join the band intent on attacking Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. "Jose has earned the right to manage Chelsea, and is on the verge of winning the title again. I don't know if he can do an awful lot more."
: Robbie Keane has scored six goals in six starts for Spurs against the Toffees.
: This was Everton's first defeat in seven Premiership home games.
