Stars turn out for Haynes

FORMER Fulham and England star Johnny Haynes was cremated at Mortonhall Crematorium in his adopted city of Edinburgh and the great, the good and the ordinary were there to see him off.

Stars turn out for Haynes

The 71-year-old, who died following a car crash last week, represented one of the ever-decreasing links with the black and white days of football.

Born in London in 1934, Haynes spent the whole of his domestic career at Craven Cottage and was perhaps best known for being the first footballer to earn more than £100 per week.

Bobby Robson, Bobby Charlton, George Cohen, Alan Mullery and current England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson were all there to pay their respects to a true legend of the English game.

A packed crematorium, heavy with emotion, heard World Cup winner Cohen read a moving and heartfelt tribute to his former teammate: “We live in a world where terms like legend and world class are over-used and attributed to so-called superstars but those words can be attributed to Johnny.

"He was a maestro and it was a privilege to have known him.”
