Giggs rejects Inter for United

INTER MILAN target Ryan Giggs admitted he thought of quitting England for Italy's Serie A during the early days of his career.

However, in the build up to Sunday's Worthington Cup final, Giggs said he plans to see out the remainder of his career at Manchester United

despite finding himself at the top of Inter Milan's summer hit-list, and at the same time hit back at suggestions of a dressing room rift within the Old Trafford camp.

Rumours of an impending summer move to Inter reached a crescendo this week when he scored a dazzling solo goal at the Stadio delle Alpi during United's stunning 3-0 Champions League win over Juventus.

Although he limped off with a thigh injury which threatens his place in Sunday's encounter, Giggs' contribution to the win fuelled the speculation which had been given substance when Inter president Massimo Moratti said he would probably make a formal bid for the Welsh international during the close season.

It appears Moratti might be around a decade too late because Giggs has every intention of seeing out the remaining three years of his contract.

"The only time I thought about playing abroad was when I was younger," said the 29-year-old.

"At that time, Serie A was the top league where all the best players were. But once I started to be successful with United I just wanted it to carry on.

"I am quite happy where I am and have over three years left on my contract. I signed that a couple of years ago, wanting to end the best playing days of my career at United. The way I see it, that is still what is going to happen."

"As a player there is nothing you can do about speculation but I guess it is nice that other clubs want you. It doesn't bother me either way though, I just concentrate on winning things with United."

Uncertainty over Giggs' future has been twisted further by talk of a dressing room split over his relationship with a former girlfriend of David Beckham's close friend Dave Gardner.

However, the 29-year-old has blasted back at reports of squad unrest, pointing to the celebrations involving himself and Beckham during the Juventus game as evidence of harmony.

"I don't know where people get their sources from but one of the main reasons why Manchester United have been so successful over the years is the team spirit," he said."That is as good as ever and it will remain like that. You can see the celebrations of the whole team when United score."

Giggs is desperate to recover in time for Sunday's game, particularly as a large number of family members are hoping to see him make a rare appearance in his home city wearing a United shirt.

He also knows his confidence has been given a major lift by his 40-minute cameo in Turin, which helped get rid of the bitter taste left by his dismal open goal blunder in the recent FA Cup defeat to Arsenal.

"The couple of days immediately after that miss were horrible," he admitted."I am my own worst critic and once you get home there is no escape from it.

"I couldn't wait for the Juventus game at Old Trafford the following Wednesday just for the chance to erase a little bit of the memory."

"Confident plays such a big part in everyone's game. You will try things you wouldn't normally if your confidence is low."

In a sense though, Giggs' brilliant contribution on Tuesday just added to the frustration felt at a series of below-par performances this season.

A section of United's home support in particular have been quick to get on his back, although the travelling Red Army have remained solidly behind their man.

Giggs admitted he has not been at his best at times this term but claimed some fans set have unrealistically high standards for him to reach.

"Generally I haven't kept to the high standards I set myself," he said.

"Over the last few weeks though my form has been quite good and hopefully I can keep that going until the end of the season.

"There are probably two kind of supporters. There are some that if I beat three or four men and cross a ball they would say it is a bad cross, there are others who say 'look what he has done to get there'.

"It is their opinion I suppose but in that way, the goal I scored in the FA Cup against Arsenal a few years ago has hampered me a little bit because fans expect you to score goals like that every week and it just isn't possible."

Apart from Giggs, manager Alex Ferguson has serious concerns over the fitness of Wes Brown and Paul Scholes as he finalises preparations for United's first domestic cup final for four years.

Scholes is believed to have the best chance of the trio, though there was some good news with confirmation that Mikael Silvestre has returned to training and will play after his recent ankle problem.

Quinton Fortune is due to make his comeback from a broken leg in a reserve team outing against Blackburn tonight and he will be added to the squad if he suffers no reaction.
