VIDEO: O'Driscoll reveals injury relief on first 'Off The Ball' interview
Brian O’Driscoll has revealed that despite having his final game in professional rugby cut short by a calf tear, he was relieved to finish his career without sustaining a more serious injury.
O’Driscoll said that while it was disappointing to leave the field after eight minutes of Leinster’s Rabo Direct Pro 12 victory over Glasgow on Saturday, he was relieved to have avoided a longer-term injury as his career wound to a close.
“It was hard to feel hard done by because I got to win a Six Nations, I got to the final [of the Rabo] and I was actually just quite relieved that it was only a bit of a soft tissue injury that I finished my career with,” O’Driscoll said on Newstalk’s ‘Off The Ball’.
“You’re always worried the last few games of picking up even an injury that whether it be a break or a dislocation where your first three, four, five months of retirement are curtailed because you can’t do anything so I was a little bit relieved in a weird way,” he added.
The legendary centre was today unveiled as a new co-presenter of the flagship Newstalk sports show and joined host Ger Gilroy to discuss his final game as well as his transition to a new career and the challenge that is likely to pose.
O’ Driscoll also discussed the aspects of retirement he is most looking forward to, his feelings watching Saturday’s match after leaving the field and the way in which rugby has evolved over the last few years.
