Rugby star in court over golf buggy charge

Wales international rugby star Andy Powell will appear in court today to face a charge of driving a golf buggy while drunk.

Powell, 28, was arrested at a motorway service station at junction 33 of the M4 hours after Wales had beaten Scotland in a Six Nations clash.

He was taken into custody with another man in the early hours of February 14 near the Wales team hotel in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Powell’s arrest and the subsequent publicity surrounding the incident saw him dropped from the Wales team the following day.

He was suspended from the squad for breaching the Welsh Rugby Union code of conduct.

Following the decision he issued a public apology and vowed to work to win back his place in the national squad.

Powell is making his first appearance at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court since being charged with “driving a mechanically propelled vehicle whilst unfit through drink”.
