Outgoing director of rugby Jim Telfer has admitted he is at a loss to explain Scotland’s poor World Cup performances.

Telfer, who famously helped mastermind the Lions’ 1997 series win in South Africa along with current Scotland chief Ian McGeechan, has despaired at a series of woeful displays which left them within three minutes of crashing out of the tournament to Fiji last weekend.
