Cashel finish with a flourish to stun Young Munster

Cashel produced a late scoring burst to shock Young Munster on a dramatic opening weekend of the ODM Financial Munster Senior Cup.

A Ger Burke try on 80 minutes had the Limerick powerhouses in control but Cashel stormed back with a late Robin Foot try and a conversion and penalty by Jonathan Ruru to snatch a 27-18 win.

Shannon scored tries in injury time from Richie Mullane and Rob Shine for a 30-20 victory over Brugg. Diarmuid O’Donovan scored Shannon’s other try and Tadhg Bennett kicked five penalties.

Holders Cork Con defeated last season’s beaten finalists UL Bohs 35-15. Niall Kenneally, Cyprian Jouve, Darragh Lyons and Graeme Lawlor scored tries for Con and Lyons kicked three penalties and three conversions. Ian Condell and Rory White replied with tries for UL Bohs while Shane Airey added a conversion and a penalty.

A last-gasp penalty by Old Crescent’s Patrick O’Sullivan sent their tie with Highfield into extra-time. Highfield led 15-12 with tries from Fintan O’Sullivan and Dave O’Hea and a conversion and penalty by Mike O’Flynn. Willie Hanly and Shane Mullally replied with tries for Crescent and Mullally kicked a conversion. A try by Sean Monaghan in extra-time converted by O’Sullivan gave Old Crescent a 22-18 victory, with O’Flynn kicking a second penalty.

A drop goal in the ninth minute of injury time by Chris Walker earned Midleton a 16-13 victory over Sunday’s Well. Midleton led 10-6 at half time with a try from Kieran Burns and a conversion and penalty by Walker to two Shane O’Riordan penalties. A try by James Mulcahy converted by O’Riordan put the ‘Well ahead 10 minutes into the second half but Walker levelled with a penalty six minutes from time before his late drop goal decided the tie.

Dolphin easily accounted for Thomond at Musgrave Park with a 43-6 victory. John Fitzgerald and Steven Hansel each scored two tries for the winners. Darren Sweetnam and Niall Scannell added tries and Rory Scannell kicked five conversions and a penalty. Dermot Fitzgerald replied with penalties for Thomond.

UCC saw off Nenagh Ormond at the Mardyke 18-11. Sean Glynn and Conor Barry scored tries for UCC and Sean Óg Murphy added a conversion and two penalties. Derek Corcoran replied with a try for Nenagh and Dan Fogarty kicked two penalties. Garryowen pulled off a 70-10 win at Richmond Park, despite Pierce McCarthy and Brian Begley tries for Richmond.
