Shannon mourn Keane

MEMBERS of Shannon Rugby Club and the wider rugby community are mourning the passing of Bobby Keane, one of the great characters of the game.

Mr Keane played a key role in the development of Shannon ever since joining the club in the late 1940s.

He went on to figure in the first Shannon team to reach a Munster Senior Cup in 1953, and again when it was won in 1960.

Keane went on to serve as an administrator, acting as fixtures secretary for many years, and he was honoured with the presidency in 2001, a year when the club won trophies at every adult level, including the AIL trophy and the Munster Senior Cup.

He is survived by his wife Jean, sons Robert and Michael and daughters Miriam, Jeanne and Annette, brother Kevin and sisters Carmel and Mary.

He will be buried in Mount Saint Oliver Cemetery today, following Requiem Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Ennis Road, Limerick at 11am.
