Richmond bid to close gap on Cashel

THE Munster Junior Cup dominates the fixture list this weekend, but the biggest match is arguably taking place in the top flight. Second-placed Richmond, who currently trail Cashel by seven points, play their game in hand at home to Waterpark.

With a game against the leaders in Limerick still to come, the title is still very much in Richmond’s hands.

They showed immense character to win an almighty struggle in Skibbereen. They have proven their quality throughout the season and will not relinquish their title lightly.

For Waterpark, there may not be anything tangible at stake as they are currently secure in mid-table. They are continuing to develop players and will give it a real go. The longer they stay in the match, the more they will fancy their chances but if Richmond get off to a good start, they may have one eye on a vital bonus point victory which they could well secure.

There are a total of 11 matches in the Junior Cup and with holders UL Bohs already knocked out, many teams will have their hopes for cup glory further strengthened. Cork Constitution are always a mighty force at this level and would be expected to be too strong for Youghal. A few weeks ago, this was a game that the East Cork team would have not relished but having hit a major upturn in form, they will be beaming with confidence and should cause the Temple Hill outfit some problems.

The clash between UCC and Young Munster should prove to be an intense encounter. There is little love lost between these clubs and whoever wins will fancy their chances of being in the shake-up.

Cashel will be aiming to maintain their winning ways with a home tie against St Mary’s. The Limerick side have some young dynamic forwards but the Tipperary side may possess too many weapons for the Limerick city side.

Newcastle West will be hoping to get a big crowd as they host Dolphin. Dolphin have players with plenty of senior experience but the Limerick side may fancy their chances especially if Tommy Kelleher plays to potential.

Skibbereen may be a good outside tip for this tournament and with a home draw against Kinsale, they should progress, despite the extra intensity this local derby will bring.

Shannon struggled to come away from Ennis with the win and with a difficult trip to Bruff, this may be the end of their cup run. Garryowen will be expecting to advance despite having to make the trip to Clonakilty.

Fermoy will hope their experienced pack can cause problems for a Clanwilliam side who have been enjoying a very good year while Highfield will need to be at their best to get the better of an in-form Galbally team.

Scariff have been exceeding many people’s expectations but their trip to Kilfeacle should prove a step too far while Tralee will be expecting to prevail at home to Midleton.

In the Junior Plate, there are some very interesting local derbies. Kanturk host Mallow and while the home side are ahead of their rivals in Division Two, they will be expecting a tough game. Both sides like to mix things up and it should be intense although on recent showings Kanturk may prevail.

Muskerry and Bandon aren’t in quite the same form as the aforementioned North Cork sides but will be eager to gain bragging rights. Bandon will enjoy home advantage and having come so close to upsetting Newcastle West in the cup, they will feel that fortune should favour them this time.

Sunday’s Well host Douglas with a lot of friendly rivalry between the respective teams. The Moneygourney side have been displaying some good form and will relish the chance to upset their local rivals. Dungarvan should make use of home advantage against Killarney while Castleisland have a big task ahead of them as they travel to Nenagh Ormond.

In the Junior Bowl, Shandon will be aiming to finally get a win under their belt as they host Old Crescent. Presentation may be disappointed not to be involved in a higher grade but should be favourites for this competition. Bantry Bay will need to put in a big display if they are to cause their opponents any problems at Rathuard.

Killorglin are at home to Kilrush and the Kerry side will be aiming to make home advantage count.

There is a single game in Division Three where Abbeyfeale will be aiming to maintain their push for promotion as they travel to face Corca Dhuibhne.
