Fogarty focused on Amlin glory after promising return

MUNSTER received an unexpected boost with the return of Denis Fogarty to rugby on Saturday, following shoulder surgery in September.

Fogarty focused on Amlin glory after promising return

The hooker played 50 minutes for Cork Constitution in their Ulster Bank All-Ireland League victory over Old Belvedere and he marked his comeback with a smashing first-half try.

Having come through without any difficulty, Fogarty is now likely to get more game time for the league champions when they play Young Munster in Limerick next weekend, and he should then be available for Munster’s Magners League clash away to Benetton Treviso on February 13.

The Ireland A international did the damage during the province’s Magners League game against the Ospreys in September and admitted that the past few months have been frustrating.

“It’s torture when you’re out of the squad and having to do your own thing; doing rehab every single day gets very repetitive and it’s not what you want to be at,” he said. “I’ve been through this type of injury before and having recovered from that, I’m fairly confident about throwing myself back into it.”

There will be no Heineken Cup action to return to however, though Fogarty jumped to Munster’s defence and described participation in the Amlin Cup as a new and exciting challenge.

“It was frustrating to see the lads go out, but that’s the way it goes. The Amlin Cup is something to aim for, we’re involved in the thick of action for two trophies and we won’t treat this competition any less seriously than we would the Heineken Cup. It’s much more than a consolation prize because there are very good teams participating in it so it’s going to be a huge challenge.”

Fogarty also insisted that Munster are far from being past their sell-by date as suggested by some observers.

“Some of the things that have been said are laughable; we’re not over the hill and we’ve produced it for 13 seasons. We must remember there are lots of high-quality teams in the Heineken Cup, one team hasn’t the right to get through year after year.”
