Henson to learn his Six Nations fate today

THE Ospreys are ready to mount a vigorous defence of their Wales Grand Slam star Gavin Henson when he faces a potential season-defining disciplinary hearing today.

Henson to learn his Six Nations fate today

Henson has been summoned before a three-man panel, chaired by the Scottish Rugby Union's Rod McKenzie, in Glasgow.

He faces charges of elbowing Leicester prop Alex Moreno, and then aiming a kick at the same player, during an ill-tempered Heineken Cup clash between the Ospreys and Leicester in Swansea last Sunday.

Match citing commissioner Bill Dunlop reported Henson, who has only made two appearances this season both against Leicester since recovering from groin surgery that ruled him out of Wales' entire autumn Test schedule.

Moreno was left with a broken nose after the elbowing incident, and he spent almost a quarter of the game being treated before returning after half-time to play the entire second period.

The minimum ban for elbowing an opponent is a fortnight, but France captain Fabien Pelous received a nine-week suspension after he struck Wallabies hooker Brendan Cannon with his elbow during last month's Test in Marseille.

The kicking charge carries a minimum three-month punishment, suggesting Henson could miss Wales' entire RBS 6 Nations campaign if he is found guilty.

Henson will be joined at the hearing in a central Glasgow solicitors' office by Ospreys team manager Derwyn Jones and the Ospreys' legal representative, who has prepared a case for Henson and his team-mate Ian Evans.

Evans was cited for kicking Leicester and England scrum-half Harry Ellis last weekend, leaving Ellis with suspected knee ligament damage and Evans facing a possible lengthy absence from the game.

"We will be fully prepared," said Jones, ahead of last night's Celtic League game between the Ospreys and Cardiff Blues, which both Henson and Evans played.

Henson has not played for Wales since the Grand Slam-clinching victory over Ireland in Cardiff last March.

Concussion then ended his Lions tour of New Zealand a week early, ruling him out of the third Test in Auckland, and he underwent surgery in Germany earlier this season to cure a long-standing groin problem.

Wales kick off their Six Nations title defence against England at Twickenham on February 4 the Millennium Stadium opponents Henson sunk when he landed a late penalty last season followed by appointments with Scotland, Ireland, Italy and France.

If Henson is forced out of the entire tournament, his earliest opportunity to regain a Wales place would be on next summer's Argentina tour.

Henson is due to appear after the panel has dealt with Evans, before a three-man group chaired by Scotland's Professor Lorne Crerar hears complaints lodged against Saracens prop Kevin Yates and Ulster forwards Justin Harrison and Matt McCullough.

Welsh citing commissioner Terry Vaux reported the three players for punching during last Saturday's Heineken Cup game between Saracens and Ulster at Vicarage Road.
