Jockey Keegan Latham was taken to hospital for a check-up after suffering a nasty-looking injury when leaving the stalls aboard Elletelle in the John Guest Diadem Stakes at Ascot.

The 20-year-old champion South African apprentice returned to the weighing room with his hand over an eye after the filly jumped slightly at the start, causing her head to collide with Latham’s face.

Elletelle is trained in Ireland by Ger Lyons, whose brother Shane said: “The filly had her head under the gate when it opened and Keegan was trying to pull her up at the same time.

“Her head came back and hit him and he has been taken to hospital to be checked out.

“His eye is swollen and he had a graze on his cheek, so there is a possibility of a fracture – but he’ll be OK in a week.”
