Wyeth may not exactly be bred for the National Hunt game but he made a winning start to his career over obstacles in the Witney UK Structures & Marquees Novices' Hurdle at Plumpton today.

The four-year-old is a half-brother to four-time Group One winner George Washington but failed to uphold family honour in nine Flat starts - winning just once, off a lowly mark of 56.

Sent off a 7-1 chance on his timber debut, he travelled strongly under trainer Gary Moore's son Jamie for much of the two-mile trip.

He was under the pump before the turn for home but kept responding to pressure and got up on the run-in to score by two and a quarter lengths from Apache Dawn.

"He is related to George Washington and ever since we have had him we have known he was a nice horse," said Moore senior.

"He has always worked very well and it's great he has gone and done it over hurdles first time.

"We will give him a bit of time, wait for the soft ground and maybe step him up in trip a bit now."

His stablemate King's Head put up a game performance to take the feature Concerto Group Total Event Solutions Handicap Hurdle, the second leg of a double on the card for the Moore family.

The five-year-old was sent off the 9-4 favourite and was covered up in midfield in the early stages of the contest.

He made significant ground to challenge the leaders before jumping the final flight and stayed on dourly to score by two and three quarter lengths from Winsley Hill.

"It's great to see him bounce back as he was quite disappointing at Stratford last time," Moore continued.

"Personally, I don't think he was quite right on the day for one reason or another, but he has put that all behind him and let's hope he goes on from here."
