Doctor Scott has winning appointment

Doctor Scott can take the step up from maiden company to Listed class in his stride with victory in the Weatherbys Bank Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury tomorrow.

Mark Johnston’s youngster has already proved himself over tomorrow’s trip of a mile when getting the better of Music Note by half a length on his debut at Hamilton Park earlier this month.

Doctor Scott, who is a half-brother to Listed winning middle-distance performer Scott’s View, picked up well in the last two furlongs that day and stayed on strongly to win ridden out.

He is a horse with plenty of scope and with improvement likely, he will be the one they all have to beat tomorrow.

Johnston can complete an across-the-card double with Unique Moment in the Renault Trafic Nursery at Newmarket.

The daughter of Vittori was well beaten under top weight in a similar event at Beverley last time, but that was not the first time she had run below par on the Westwood and she may not be suited by the track.

On her penultimate start she looked quite useful when winning her maiden at Leicester by a length and a half from Renderoc.

Unique Moment probably appreciated the stronger pace that day and she came clear in the final furlong for a convincing win.

She looks a good bet to regain the winning thread at Headquarters.

Larkwing can make amends for an unfortunate run last time by winning the Breheny Handicap for local trainer Geoff Wragg.

On that most recent outing he finished third, beaten just over three lengths by the winner but with better luck it could have been a vastly different story.

He was travelling well when he found himself short of room three furlongs out and was subsequently badly hampered.

Once he had recovered and was switched wide, he stayed on with real purpose, albeit too late.

Larkwing’s luck can change tomorrow and he is made the nap selection.

Virgin Soldier showed signs of a return to form when a close fourth at Redcar earlier this month.

Alan Swinbank’s versatile performer has won on the Flat, over hurdles and fences but has not scored on the level since May 2001.

But he gave every indication when beaten about two lengths by the winner, Considine, at the Cleveland venue last time that his turn was near.

Virgin Soldier should improve for that run and is worth an interest in the Wiske Handicap at Thirsk.
