Jockey Cleary critical after Galway fall

Apprentice jockey Sean Cleary is critically ill with severe head injuries in intensive care in the neuro-surgical unit at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital following a fall at Galway on Sunday.

Cleary was initially taken to Galway University Hospital before being transferred to Dublin by helicopter last night.

Cleary was riding All Heart for Paddy Mullins in the seven-furlong Corrib Oil Auction Race when his mount clipped the heels of another runner and fell about half a mile from the finish.

Cleary, in his early 20s and from Athlone, first spent three years with Jim Bolger before joining Pat Flynn in Co Waterford where he has been for the past two seasons.
