Monty's Pass could make '04 return

Martell Cognac Grand National winner Monty’s Pass is none the worse for his famous victory over Aintree’s gruelling four and a half miles and he is set to be aimed at the race again next year, trainer Jimmy Mangan said on Sunday.

“He’s absolutely brilliant this morning and is out eating grass at the moment,” said Mangan, whose return home to Ireland was delayed after he missed the boat on Saturday night.

“And I would think we’d have a crack again next year.”

Monty’s Pass cruised home by 12 lengths from Supreme Glory in Saturday’s spectacular after an almost flawless round of jumping.

“He was something unreal,” Mangan said. “I couldn’t believe the way he floated over those jumps.

"He was second in the Topham Trophy last year and we said there and then we are coming for the big one next year.”

A celebration and homecoming was planned for Monty’s Pass and jockey Barry Geraghty on Sunday evening at Mangan’s base at Curraheen, Conna, Mallow in Co Cork.
