New Approach can silence critics
Trainer Jim Bolger sparked a tumult of emotions earlier this week when making a U-turn on his statements that New Approach would not line up on the Downs.
However, the rethink can pay off as the colt looks head and shoulders above his rivals in the mile-and-a-half Classic.
Bred to get the trip being by Galileo out of the top-class mare Park Express, New Approach carried all before him as a juvenile and finished the year unbeaten in five starts.
However, defeat was just around the corner as he found Henrythenavigator just a fraction too good in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket before the Ballydoyle colt more than doubled that nose verdict in the Irish equivalent.
New Approach lost little in defeat on either occasion, with the ground at the Curragh last time evidently far too quick for him to truly excel on.
Conditions at Epsom will be much more to his liking and despite all the controversy, it is hard to get away from New Approach’s obvious claims.
Of the rest, expect Tartan Bearer and Kandahar Run to show up well and claim the minor honours.
