RUNNING legend Sonia O'Sullivan has fired the starter's gun on the countdown to July's Beast of Beara, one of Ireland’s most scenic and fast-growing participation events.
Following a blockbuster second year that saw a whopping 40% increase in registrations, the July 18th event is experiencing another surge in demand, with participants already locking in their spots for the upcoming challenge. It takes place the day before the All-Ireland SHC final, World Cup final in the US, and on the weekend of the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale outside Liverpool. What a bracing and challenging way to tee up 2026's sportingest weekend.
This year's event has been given a truly Olympic seal of approval with Sonia O’Sullivan—whose family roots trace back to the historic O’Sullivan Bere clan—as well as reigning champion Mike Burton spearheading the call for walkers, joggers, and runners of all abilities to secure their places and experience the unique spirit of the peninsula.
Gushed Garnish GAA's Ollie Rua O'Sullivan: "For anyone who loves outdoors, we promise an unforgettable weekend in Allihies, inviting you to walk, jog or race the Beast of Béara to support its club development fundraiser for 2026. This year’s mountain trail will be measured to a half marathon distance (21.1km) and encompass part of the Beara Way walking route, taking in Allihies Coppermines, Ternahillane, Goula and coastal walking trails."
He added: "Whether your goal is to walk, jog, or run, the event welcomes all abilities to face the challenge at their own pace. While the challenging routes push participants to their limits, the overwhelming feedback has highlighted an unparalleled sense of camaraderie and a deep reverence for the region's raw beauty. More than just a race, it is a celebration of resilience and heritage, designed to spark a lifelong love affair with West Cork and draw visitors back to the region year after year."

O'Sullivan said what sets the Beast of Beara apart is its profound community spirit and purpose. Organised in partnership with the Garnish GAA Club and the extended communities of Garnish, Allihies, and Cahermore, 100% of the event’s proceeds go directly toward the future sustainability of local youth sport and community facilities. This symbiotic relationship, where the event's success translates into tangible local development, has created a powerful sense of local ownership and a uniquely warm, welcoming atmosphere that runners feel at every single turn.
"A 40% jump in registrations in just our second year was phenomenal, and the response we've seen since reopening registration has shown that the word-of-mouth is only getting stronger," added Finbarr Harrington, Chairman of the Garnish GAA. "More than the numbers, it’s a phenomenal reflection of the heart and soul of this community - from the marshals cheering on the ascents to the local businesses - that truly makes 'The Beast' what it is. Spaces are filling up, and we are ready to welcome everyone to become part of our story this year."
