The ninth AFLW season gets underway on Friday with 33 Irish players across 13 different clubs set to be involved in 2024.

Sydney Swans face Collingwood in Friday’s curtain-raiser (10.15am Irish time). TG4 will broadcast two deferred matches each weekend as well as weekly highlights. As well as the 33 players, there are three Irish women on the inactive list for 2024. Aimee Mackin (Armagh, Melbourne) and Erone Fitzpatrick (Laois, Carlton) both suffered ACL injuries.

Aishling Sheridan (Cavan, Collingwood) made the decision to stay at home to spend more time with friends and family.

Carlton 

Dayna Finn (Mayo) The Mayo native played five games in her debut season last year. Finn was a talented basketballer and represented Ireland at national level. She has been named in the extended team for Sunday’s clash with the Hawks.

Geelong 

Rachel Kearns (Mayo) A fourth season for the Mayo star who is set to make her 25th appearance this week.

Anna-Rose Kennedy (Tipperary) Injury curtailed her rookie year although she managed to impress enough to earn a debut in the Preliminary Final against Brisbane.

Aishling Moloney ( Tipperary) The breakout star of the 2023 campaign. Moloney was a sensation, scoring 10 goals on her way to the AFLPA’s Best First Year Player award.

Kate Kenny (Offaly) One to watch. It has been confirmed that the 22-year-old will make her debut this weekend versus Melbourne. Last March, the Ferbane native hit 1-3 to help DCU to retain the O’Connor Cup.

Hawthorn 

Aileen Gilroy (Mayo) This will be Gilroy’s sixth season Down Under. She originally joined North Melbourne, before making a successful move to the Hawks where she has had back-to-back top 10 finishes in the club’s best and fairest.

Aine McDonagh (Galway) Another former basketballer, McDonagh won Hawthorn’s Most Improved Player award in 2023.

Collingwood 

Sarah Rowe (Mayo) One of the most respected and experienced Irish players in the competition. The 28-year-old had a career-best season in 2023.

Muireann Atkinson (Monaghan) A former housemate of Rowe and Aishling Sheridan, it has been confirmed the former Monaghan captain will debut in the opening round.

North Melbourne 

Erika O’Shea (Cork) This is Year 3 for the exciting defender who became a big threat from half-back in 2023.

Niamh Martin (Tipperary) The 23-year-old played seven games last season and scored one goal.

Vikki Wall (Meath) Wall is making her return to AFLW after stepping away to try and make the Irish Rugby Sevens team for the Olympics.

Bláithín Bogue (Fermanagh) Another rookie. Player of the Match in the 2022 All-Ireland Junior Ladies’ final.

Melbourne 

Sinead Goldrick (Dublin) Marked her fifth season by coming fourth in the club Best and Fairest awards. 43 games and counting.

Blaithin Mackin (Armagh) 22 games and five goals so far.

Fremantle Dockers 

Aisling McCarthy (Tipperary) 43 appearances for the Western Bulldogs and West Coast Eagles previously.

Aine Tighe (Leitrim) A very impressive strike rate of 23 goals in 29 games.

Orlagh Lally (Meath) The Meath All-Ireland winner is in her third year.

Amy Mulholland (Armagh) A small forward who originally moved to Australia for non-football reasons.

Joanne Cregg (Roscommon) Cregg mixed between midfield and forward in her rookie year, playing eight times.

St Kilda 

Grace Kelly (Mayo) A versatile athlete who played 10 matches in 2023.

Brisbane Lions 

Orla O’Dwyer (Tipperary) An All-Australian in Season 6. Consistently awesome.

Jennifer Dunne (Dublin) A three-time All-Ireland winner who won a Premiership in her rookie year.

Gold Coast Suns 

Clara Fitzpatrick (Down) A veteran defender who originally joined St Kilda in 2020.

Niamh McLaughlin (Donegal) Ladies Footballer of the Year in 2022, 11 games and four games in her debut stint.

Cara McCrossan (Tyrone) Joined after impressing in the VFLW (reserves) with Casey Demons.

Lauren McConville (Armagh) The 29-year-old signed as an injury-replacement player last July.

GWS Giants 

Eilish O’Dowd (Leitrim-born, represented Dublin) O’Dowd started for Dublin in the 2023 All-Ireland final victory over Kerry.

Sydney Swans

Tanya Kennedy (Donegal) One of many remarkable Irish sporting stories in Australia. She moved to Australia in 2012, played Gaelic football, made it to the Swans as injury cover last year and cemented a permanent spot thanks to a stellar campaign.

Julie O’Sullivan (Kerry) O’Sullivan is in her second year with Sydney. She developed as last year went on and had a terrific semi-final against Adelaide Crows with 15 disposals and seven tackles.

Paris McCarthy (Kerry) The former D1 basketballer logged six appearances last season.

Adelaide Crows

Niamh Kelly (Mayo) The former Mayo captain spent three seasons with West Coast Eagles before making the move to South Australia. Last November, she became the second Irish woman to be selected on the AFLW's All-Australian Team of the Year.

Amy Boyle Carr (Donegal) A former Sligo Rovers and Republic of Ireland footballer who signed as a rookie.
