Leaks emerge in velodrome roof
Leaks have apparently emerged in the velodrome roof after rain hit the Olympic Park today.
Officials are understood to be investigating whether droplets of water - spotted on the ground in several parts of the venue – could affect today’s cycling.
So far the track has escaped unscathed but spots of rain have been reported in the Chinese “pen”, where the country’s athletes are stationed during events.
More water appears to have come through in another couple of places in the centre of the arena and could cause concern for cyclists should it land on the track.
A source at the velodrome said organisers were “currently checking” the nature of the leaks.
The velodrome – dubbed the “Pringle” because of its shape – has been designed to ensure optimum conditions for cyclists and provide the Games with a record-breaking track.
Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy advised on its construction.
The roof is strung with steel cables and has been designed to collect rain water to help reduce mains water usage.
