Sorenstam rejects Solheim Cup captaincy
Annika Sorenstam has turned down the chance to captain Europe at the Solheim Cup next year.
Sweden’s former world number one and 10-time major champion has revealed she was asked to lead the team in Colorado, as they attempt to defend the trophy they won in Ireland last year.
However, having been assistant captain at Killeen Castle, and seen the pressures on skipper Alison Nicholas, Sorenstam decided it would be too consuming a role.
Sorenstam, who has had two young children since retiring as a player in 2008, the latest a son born at 27 weeks last year, is determined to put her family first.
She wrote on her website: “After much thought, I have decided to decline the offer of the 2013 European Solheim Cup captaincy.
“The Solheim Cup has been an important part of my career, and I hope to one day lead the European team.
“However, after working with captain Alison Nicholas and her team this past year as vice-captain, I saw first hand the incredible amount of work and dedication it takes to be the captain.”
Sorenstam, 41, played in eight Solheim Cups, but said: “With my young family, foundation, businesses, and other commitments I have already made to try and help grow the game, I simply cannot provide the necessary time that the European team, Solheim family, and the entire event deserves.
“This certainly was not an easy decision to make, as the Solheim Cup will always be very special to me. I am confident that the Ladies European Tour will select a wonderful captain and I have offered to help the team in any way I can, in an unofficial role.”
Meg Mallon will captain the United States team.
