The first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii has been postponed until Friday after heavy overnight rain left the course at Waialae Country Club unplayable.

The first two rounds will now will be played on Friday and Saturday with the final two rounds scheduled for Sunday.

The cut will be the nearest number to 60 players, although everyone in the top 70 will get credit for making the cut and will get paid.

Heavy rain meant several fairways and bunkers were unplayable because of standing water with almost four inches falling in the area around the course and Hawaii under a flash-flood watch.

With more rain forecast organisers were forced to abandon any hopes of playing.

The field includes the likes of Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Justin Rose and Steve Bowditch, making his first US Tour appearance for four years.
