Hawaii five under for Furyk
Jim Furyk birdied the final two holes to complete a five-under-par 67 and take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Grand Slam of Golf.
Furyk trailed US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy by one shot before birdies of 10 feet at the 17th hole and nine feet at the 18th on the oceanside Poipu Bay Golf Course.
Ogilvy took the lead with a birdie at the fifth hole. He birdied the ensuing hole and maintained the lead until Furyk’s finish.
Tiger Woods, who won the Open and PGA Championship this year, was spraying drives all day but birdied the final hole to finish at 70, one shot better than Canadian Mike Weir.
On the second hole, Woods sailed a shot into the left rough, prompting Furyk to ask jokingly: “Hey, Tiger, who’s away?”
“Here we go,” Woods responded.
“What? I’ll only get to say it once,” Furyk said, bringing laughter from the gallery. Woods responded by recovering for birdie, while Furyk settled for par.
This is an unofficial 36-hole event which has been dominated by Woods, who has won it six of the eight times it has been held, including last year. Furyk won on his only previous appearance at the tournament in 2003.
The event is intended to feature the winners of this year’s majors, however Masters champion and 2004 winner Phil Mickelson decided not to participate and was replaced by Weir.
With Woods winning two of the majors, Furyk was given a berth for finishing second on the PGA Tour money list.
Last year, Woods fired a 13-under 131 to easily beat Mickelson, Michael Campbell and Vijay Singh.
