Sergio Garcia has lost to Stewart Cink by 4 and 3 in the Sunday singles on day three at the K Club.

Garcia had a chance to become the first European ever to win all five points in a match, but his opponent birdied the first two and then, after the Spaniard had holed from seven feet at the 170-yard third, made it four in five holes to go three clear.

He led by a massive five when Garcia bogeyed the next two – he was in water on the seventh – but Cink bogeyed the short eighth after straying into the River Liffey.

Another Garcia birdie narrowed the gap to three on the 11th, but in a remarkable run his opponent won the 12th with a 50-footer, halved the next from 30 feet and won the match when he replied to Garcia’s chip-in on the 15th with a 25-foot putt. Cink was six under.
