No joy for Irish in Wales

Unbeaten Rory McIlroy could not save Ireland from defeat in the Men's Home Internationals in Wales.

The Irish boys went down 8-7 to Scotland - winning three and halving three of the 10 singles matches at Pyle and Kenfig.

McIlroy and Jonathan Cadwell teamed up to give Ireland a winning start over Lloyd Saltman and George Murray in the morning foursomes.

And while the sides finished the session level - 2.5 to 2.5 - it was Scotland who dominated the singles.

McIlroy halved with Saltman in the top match while Connor Doran also ended level with recently-crowned US Amateur champion Richie Ramsay at No 2.

Lurgan's Gareth Shaw, Limerick's Pat Murray and Offaly ace Shane Lowry gave Ireland hope with brilliant wins while Darren Crowe grabbed a half.

But it was a struggle after that as Caldwell, Simon Ward, Niall Kearney and Aaron O'Callaghan all lost.

In the other match, England came from 3-2 down after the foursomes to beat hosts Wales.
