Matthew stays in contention
Scotland’s Catriona Matthew stayed in the hunt after a second round two-under-par 70 at the Florida’s Natural Charity Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.
On six-under 138 at halfway, the British number one was tied for 16th place - and six shots behind young South Korean Sung Ah Yim, who shot a great 64 highlighted by an eagle and seven birdies.
Wales’ Becky Morgan was also well in the mix on five under after also shooting 70 – although she did drop a couple of late shots.
Yim led by one from compatriot Jee Young Lee, a rookie who shot a great 65, but this season’s major winner Karrie Webb and world number one Annika Sorenstam were perfectly poised to pounce.
Australia’s Webb, the former world number one, appears rejuvenated following her stunning play-off victory in the Kraft Nabisco Championship three weeks ago, and she repeated her opening 67 to tie for third on 10-under 134.
Sorenstam, who won here by 10 shots last year, was another shot behind after adding a 69 to her opening 66.
Matthew had a solid three-birdie round and said: “I didn’t putt as well as the first day but it was much windier and conditions were not easy.
“I feel I am in pretty good shape going into the weekend.”
Sorenstam had good reason to be even more confident. “I have made a lot of birdies and an eagle over the last two days, but just thrown in the odd mistake. I am looking forward to the next two days.”
England’s former world number one Laura Davies shot an 82 in the first round - and she pulled out late on Thursday evening claiming a leg injury.
