The groin injury which kept Australian Steve Elkington out of the Players Championship two weeks ago has also resulted in his withdrawal from the Masters starting on Thursday.

It was to have been the 43-year-old’s first appearance in the event since 2003 and his absence reduces the field to a mere 90 players.

Elkington finished joint runner-up to Phil Mickelson in the US PGA championship last August.
