David Toms birdied the first hole to take the sole lead and never looked back on his way to a commanding five-stroke victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Toms, who started the day tied for the lead with Chad Campbell, made only one bogey in an assured five-under-par 65 in ideal conditions at Waialae Country Club.

Two months after undergoing a relatively routine heart procedure, he finished at 19-under 261, collecting his 12th victory on the PGA Tour, while Campbell (70) and Rory Sabbatini (62) tied for second at 266.

Any chance of an exciting final round was quickly snuffed out by the 39-year-old Toms, who made three birdies on the front nine to build a four-shot cushion at the turn.

It was pretty academic after that as he stayed out of serious trouble and forced his opponents to do something special, which were they incapable of, apart from Sabbatini, whose eight-shot deficit starting the round proved insurmountable.
