Tiger Woods shot a five-under-par 67 to lead by three strokes after the first round of the Grand Slam of Golf in Hawaii.

USPGA champion Phil Mickelson is in second while US Open winner Michael Campbell dropped away in the closing holes but was in third after a one-over 73.

Fiji’s Vijay Singh had a disastrous seven at the par-three 11th and finished the day in last place after a 75.

The Grand Slam of Golf is competed for between the winners of the year’s four Majors but as Woods won both the Masters and the Open, Singh got the invite based on his finishes in the tournaments.

Woods performed best in the strong winds despite suffering an ankle injury he picked up when winning the Dunlop Tournament in Japan last weekend.

And the world number one admitted: “It was a very interesting round of golf and I survived it.”
