Goosen ahead in Beijing
World number five Retief Goosen scorched to a course-record 64 on the opening day of the Asian Tour’s Volkswagen Masters – China event at the Jinghua Golf Club in Beijing.
The South African carded two eagles and five birdies to lead by two strokes from Canadian Darren Griff and Australian Gary Simpson.
US Open champion Michael Campbell and Scotland’s John Wither are a shot further back after 67s.
“It’s great to get off to a good start. Now, I have something to build on for the next three rounds,” said Goosen.
“Obviously there is still a long way to go but I’m very happy to start off like this.”
Campbell, who was playing in the group behind the lead and had problems with his left hip throughout the round, had one eagle, four birdies and a bogey.
“Seeing Retief’s backside all day today was quite different. Obviously, he played great and he was holing all his putts,” said Campbell, who blamed new insoles in his shoes for his discomfort.
“Every time I took a step, I felt pain. I have to see the physiotherapist. I think it’ll be fine for the rest of the week,” said the European Tour’s Order of Merit leader.
