Londoner Brian Davis, the son-in-law of former England goalkeeper Ray Clemence, took a six-stroke lead into the final round of the US Tour qualifying school in California today.

Bitterly disappointed about missing out on a Ryder Cup debut in September, Davis has been in scintillating form at PGA West and added a fifth-round 68 in cold and rain to take over at the top and move clear.

“It was freezing cold,” he said. “I didn’t have my proper gear with me – I thought I was coming to the desert.”

The leading 30 and ties receive cards for next season and former British Masters champion Greg Owen is breezing through as well just seven months after undergoing back surgery.

Owen moved into a share of second place with his 72 and stands 13 under, but the pressure is on Welsh Ryder Cup star Phillip Price after he slipped to eight under and joint 17th with a 73.

Price has scored marginally worse on each of the five days so far and 15 players are separated by only one shot either side of the cut line currently standing at seven under.

Swedes Richard Johnson and Per-Ulrik Johansson are in with a chance of making it through as well.
