Rain spells delay for Els

Ernie Els’ defence of his HSBC World Match Play Championship title was delayed this morning because of adverse weather conditions.

The South African, who will at least be able to enjoy his home comforts for a little longer as his house backs onto the Wentworth course, was scheduled to tee-off against Volvo PGA winner Scott Drummond at 8.20am.

However, the world number two woke up to persistent, heavy rain this morning which has left greens flooded in places and caused at least a two-hour delay.

Els will now hope to be able to begin his pursuit for a record-breaking sixth title at 10.20am but with the rain continuing to fall that may be an unlikely prospect.
