Garcia grinds to a halt

Sergio Garcia managed just two shots of his opening round before play was suspended in the Mallorca Classic today.

Garcia had just played his second shot to the par-five 10th hole when the players were called off the course as a thunderstorm approached.

The pre-tournament favourite was safely back in the clubhouse when the heavens opened 10 minutes later, and could be there for some time if past experience is anything to go by.

Last year’s tournament at Pula Golf Club was reduced to 54 holes after similar problems, Miguel Angel Jimenez overturning a five-shot deficit in the final round to beat fellow Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal by a shot.

Jimenez is not defending his title in Mallorca, choosing instead to play for the £1m (€1.5m) first prize on offer in the World Match Play at Wentworth, and Garcia may be regretting his decision not to do the same.
