Duo miss out on US Open

England’s Luke Donald and Swede Jesper Parnevik have failed in their bid to qualify for next week's United States Open at Shinnecock Hills.

Both took part in the 36-hole qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, but Parnevik’s two rounds of 70 saw him miss out on a play-off by one shot and Donald’s 70-73 total was four strokes too many.

However, German Alex Cejka and Parnevik’s compatriot Daniel Chopra made it through in joint fourth place, Cejka recording two 67s and Chopra following up an opening 69 with a superb 65.

Just 33 of the 184-strong field qualified and others to miss out were former Open champions Tom Lehman and Mark O’Meara, 2002 Ryder Cup player Niclas Fasth and Carl Pettersson.

Gabriel Hjertstedt finished joint sixth at Canoe Brook in New Jersey, but two more Swedes, Mathias Gronberg and Richard Johnson, were not among the 22 who qualified there, while English pair Ed Fryatt and David Griffiths failed in California and Maryland respectively.
