Wedding must wait for Open champ

Open champion Ben Curtis feels as ready as he can be for what is shaping up to be the most hectic day of his life.

On top of playing in the $6m (€5.4m) NEC world championship in Akron, Curtis is getting married on Saturday – whenever he can get to the church.

Only on Friday night will the 26-year-old American, who lives 30 minutes’ drive from the Firestone course, know what time he is teeing off in the third round and only then will he, his bride Candace and all the wedding guests have a proper idea of when the service is taking place.

ā€œIt’s going to be nerve-wracking, but hopefully I’ll make both on time and have a great day,ā€ said Curtis, who until his out-of-the-blue victory at Sandwich last month had no reason to think he would be playing at all this week.

ā€œAs far as I know it’s the only wedding of the day, so hopefully we won’t be holding anybody else up.ā€

As for the guests, he added: ā€œWe made some phone calls and said the time may be changed.

"Everybody has been very supportive and Candace said ’Just go out there and play good and not worry about the wedding until it’s over’.ā€
