Dyson battles fatigue
Simon Dyson moved into contention for the Volvo Masters today despite feeling totally drained of energy.
The 24-year-old York golfer managed a three under par 68 at Valderrama while waiting for the results of blood tests taken last week.
“No, terrible,” was Dyson’s reply when asked if he was fully fit now. “This is the worst I’ve felt for a while.
“I’m not going to hit any balls because I’m shattered. I’m quite a good sleeper, but I’m sleeping ridiculous – more than I ever have.
“Even on the range this morning I was hitting drivers and after four or five I was shattered.
“That’s probably the slowest I’ve ever walked 18 holes, just to conserve my energy.
“I have to see what it is and I’ve got a nice seven weeks off after this.”
Considering his condition, it was a remarkable effort when Dyson, who last month had his clubs stolen from the boot of his car between rounds in the Dunhill Links Championship, birdied three of his last six holes.
Enjoying life much more at the moment is Londoner Brian Davis, who also fired a 68.
The 28-year-old married the daughter of former England goalkeeper Ray Clemence on October 20, and seven days later was second in the Madrid Open.
This summer Davis missed six halfway cuts in a row, could not see himself playing well ever again and turned to former tour player Peter Mitchell for help.
“He’s totally changed my swing and it’s nice to have someone who knows what it’s like to stand out there on the fairway. Mentally he knows what you’re going through,” Davis said.
After double-bogeying the short third, Davis had four successive birdies from the eighth
