Golf: Torrance, Bjorn and Woosnam advance

Sam Torrance won the battle of the two late invites at the World Matchplay Championships, beating Seve Ballesteros three and two.

It was a victory for the man ranked 193rd on the European Order of Merit this year over the man ranked 230th. But the golf was better than that until Ballesteros lost his way after lunch and went to the turn in a five-over 40 to go from one up to three down.

Thomas Bjorn beat Adam Scott four and three to earn a World Matchplay Championship meeting with Lee Westwood. Westwood won seven titles last year including this Wentworth event.

But he is still seeking his first victory of 2001.

Ian Woosnam recorded a notable four and three success over Retief Goosen at the World Match Play Championships.

The Welshman set up a quarter-final clash with 1999 champion Colin Montgomerie. Woosnam admitted the tight schedule was a problem at the end of the afternoon.

He said: "I was feeling the pace. I didn't want to go any further and was glad to hole a six-footer to close it out. Retief was not on his best game, but he might have had the advantage on me at the end."

Woosnam has not won a title for four-and-a-half years but is enjoying a renaissance this season.
