President Bush was among the first people to congratulate Tiger Woods after he had achieved golfing history last night.

Woods' press conference at Augusta, where he had just added the Masters to his US Open, British Open and US PGA victories last season, was delayed when a call came through from the White House.

America’s new President comes from a golfing background. His father is a member of the Royal and Ancient Club and his great-grandfather donated the Walker Cup played for each other year between Britain and Ireland's amateurs and their United States counterparts.

While still Governor of Texas, George W Bush gave a motivational talk to the American Ryder Cup team before their dramatic comeback in Boston two years ago, reminding them of the Alamo.

Bets have already been placed on Woods one day becoming President, but the 25-year-old says he has no plans other than to continue winning majors.
